The Plastic People of the Universe: Prague’s underground rock’n’roll resistance

The Plastic People of the Universe was an avantgarde rock band of Prague’s underground culture. Their nonconformism so threatened the Communist regime that they and their fans were often arrested. The arrest and trial of band members in 1976–and the deportation of a former consultant for good measure–inspired Václav Havel and others to write and sign the Charter 77, a civic initiative hoping to force the government into honoring its human rights’ commitments.
